PORTALES, N.M.— After a standout 2009-10 season by the athletic teams at Eastern New Mexico University,
Nathan Uland (Jr., LB, Denton, Texas/Ryan HS) from the Greyhound football team has been selected as the Greatest Greyhound, while
Samantha Lawrence (Sr., F, Roswell, N.M./Goddard HS) was chosen as the Greatest Zia. Players are nominated for the awards by head coaches and voted on by the athletic staff and coaches.
Uland finished fourth in the nation in tackles per game (12.0) and second overall with 132. He was 15th in the country in tackles for a loss (1.68/game) and led the Lone Star Conference in total tackles and tackles per game and was second in tackles for a loss. Sixth in the LSC in fumbles recovered. Uland reached double figures in tackles in six games, including a 20-tackle performance against Angelo State, made 12 stops in the opener at CSU-Pueblo along with a pass batted down and two blocked extra point attempts. He had four tackles for a loss in the Wagon Wheel game at West Texas A&M and three in a win at Southwestern Oklahoma State. Uland is a two-Time Academic ALl-District, two-time All LSC South (HM/2009, 2008) and a two-time Academic All-LSC South selection (2009, 2008).
Lawrence becomes the first player on record to record multiple Greatest Zia selections after winning it for the first time last season. She led the Zias with seven goals in her final season, scoring twice in wins over Howard Payne and New Mexico Highlands. Lawrence had four game-winning goals, coming against Fort Lewis, Highlands, Northwestern Oklahoma and Northeastern State. She finished tied for second in the LSC in game-winning goals (4), tied for third in shots (52), sixth in shots per game (2.74). She finished as the ENMU career leader in goals (37), goals per game (0.5), game-winning goals (13), shots (223), shots per game (3.01), shots on goal (137) and shots on goal per game (1.85). Lawrence is second in career points with 77. NSCAA Scholar All-West Region First Team (2008), National Consortium for Sport 2008 Academic Momentum Award, 2008 Academic All-LSC, three-time All-LSC (2nd/2009, 1st/2008, HM/2007), two-time Academic All District (2nd/2009, 1st/2008), LSC Offensive Player of the Week 10/2/2008 and 2007), 2007 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
