Box Score

ALAMOSA, COLO.— Freshman midfielder Eishu Kanemitsu (Tokyo, Japan/Emily Carr Secondary) broke a scoreless tie 22:09 into the opening period of the Eastern New Mexico University men soccer team’s (1-0) season opener at Adams State (0-1), en-route to a 6-0 victory at Murphy Field. The win marked the Hounds second shutout in a season opener and the first since a 2-0 win at Colorado Christian on August 24, 2006.

Kanemitsu’s goal came on a cross pass from Andy Wilkinson (Fr., M, Lewes, East Sussex, England/Sussex Downs 6th form college) and Eastern followed with the 23rd goal of Emerson Rodrigues’ (Sr., F, Natal, RN, Brazil/Colegio Objectivo Portugar) career to take a 2-0 advantage into halftime. The Grizzlies held an 8-5 edge in shots in the opening 45 minutes, but ENMU enjoyed a 5-2 lead in shots on goal.

Early in the second half Pablo Quintana (So., F, Farmington, N.M./San Juan College) and Kal Herbert (So., M, Willaston, England/Neston HS) tallied back-to-back goals in a span of less than two minutes to double the Hounds lead.

With 15:56 remaining, Edgar Bear (Sr., M, Houston, Texas/Ross S Sterling HS) found the back of the net for the ninth time of his career after picking up a rebound from Luis Castañeda (Jr., M, Chaparral, N.M./Gadsden HS). The goal moved him into a three-way tie for fifth on the ENMU career-scoring list. Quintana scored his second goal of the game with 2:48 remaining to provide the final margin. Eastern outshot ASC by a 17-3 margin in the second half, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal.

Chris Sheridan (Fr., G, Spring, Texas/Spring HS) made four saves to record the 28th shutout win in Greyhound history, while Paul Pizza made four saves for the Grizzlies.

The Eastern New Mexico University men’s soccer team will make their home debut on Sunday at noon, when they play University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
