HOBBS, N.M.— Senior midfielder Calie Rush (Clovis, N.M./Clovis HS) became the fourth player in Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer history to score three goals in a game, helping the Zias (1-1) rally from a one-goal deficit to post a 7-1 victory over University of the Southwest (0-3), Tuesday evening, in Hobbs, N.M.

The Zias tied a team record with seven goals in the contest, while their 49 shots were the second-highest total in team history, falling just shy of the record of 53.

The Mustangs struck first, when Britney Wells stole the ball 25-yards out and dribbled towards the Zia goal, before depositing the ball in the right side of the net. The goal gave USW their first lead over Eastern since October 2, 2006. Eastern remained patient and dominated the entire first half, outshooting the Mustangs by a 24-1 margin. Brook Serrano (So., F, Los Lunas, N.M./Los Lunas HS) finally broke through for ENMU, tying the game on her second goal of the season at the 33:29 mark.

Desiree Dominguez (R-Fr., M, Alamogordo, N.M./Alamogordo HS) headed a Rush pass into the Mustang net, 7:46 into the second half to give ENMU a 2-1 lead it would not relinquish. Justine Tydings (Sr., D, Sr., D, Albuquerque, N.M./Valley HS) added to the lead on a penalty kick less than two minutes later.

Over a span of less than 20 minutes, Rush put together a natural hat trick, scoring on two cross passes, sandwiched around a goal off her own deflection. She joined Kelly Parkans, Megan Dozier and Samantha Lawrence as the only Zias to score a hat trick in a game. Her performance also matched Dozier’s team-record seven-point game at Colorado Christian on September 3, 2004.

Sydney Tucker (Fr., F, Redmond, Ore./Redmond HS) scored the final goal of the game with 6:49 left, tying the record of seven goals, also set against USW, exactly three years ago today.

Eastern outshot the Mustangs by a 49-2 margin, including a decisive 21-1 edge in shots on goal. The Zias also enjoyed a 10- advantage in corner kicks in the contest.Candice Guthrie (Jr., G, Peralta, N.M./Los Lunas HS) earned her first win of the season, playing all 90 minutes. Her counterpart, Jessika Caudel made 10 saves in the game and came out of the net a number of times in the opening half to prevent scoring opportunities.

The Eastern New Mexico University women’s soccer team will return to action on Friday, when they visit New Mexico Highlands University. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. MST.
