BIRMINGHAM, ALA. - Sabrina Huelga (Sr., Lancaster, Calif. / Paraclete HS) competed in the NCAA Div. II Track and Field Championships Friday, placing 17th in the preliminary heat of the women's 800-meter run.

Huelga was the only Zia to qualify for the championships and one of two Lone Star Conference athletes to compete in 800-meter run.  Jaylen Rodgers from Angelo State University placed 13th in the event.  The two runners did not finish in the top eight and failed to move on to the finals.

Huelga competed at several meets this season earning four top 10 finishes.  Her first event came at the University of New Mexico Lobo Open where she placed fourth with a time of 2:18.  Her best time of the season came at the LSC championships, where Huelga finished in second place with a time of 2:12.04, finishing only three seconds behind the first place runner, Rodgers.  Her time of 2:12 was converted to 2:11.66 and was not only a personal best for Huelga, but broke the Eastern school record by a full second and a half.

Huelga earned All-NCAA Region Honors for Div. II track and field last weekend and is one of the teams most decorated athletes.  The senior will return to Portales, N.M., to prepare for the upcoming outdoor season.
