Gridiron Greyhounds Overcome Fast Start by Grizzlies

ALAMOSA, COLO. — Facing a 14-0 deficit, the Eastern New Mexico University football team (2-0) powered its way to a 44-30 win over Adams State (0-2), Saturday night at Rex Field. The victory improved Eastern to 2-0 for the second straight season.

How it Happened:
  • Adams State scored on each of their first two possessions to seize a 14-0 lead just five minutes into the game
  • The Greyhounds responded with a 13-play, 91 yard drive and scored on a four-yard run from Silas Jefferson
  • After Fe'ao Vunipola forced and recovered a fumble on the ensuing possession, Kamal Cass scored on a 16-yard run to tie the game
  • Each team found the end zone in the second quarter, but the Grizzlies intercept4ed a two-point conversion attempt to take a 21-20 lead into the locker room
  • Eastern took the lead for the first time, 27-21, on a two-yard plunge from Jeremy Doucette to start the second half
  • Adams State responded with a 35-yard field goal from Zach Cimaglia, but a 67-yard touchdown reception from Adrian Horton just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter allowed Eastern to start pulling away
 
Inside the Statistics
  • Eastern scored touchdowns on five of its seven trips to the red zone after a four-for-four performance last week
  • For the second straight game, ENMU did not commit a turnover
  • Eastern held a 373-204 yard advantage in the running game
  • The Hounds outrushed ASU 190-71 in the second half
  • With 102 yards, D'Maujeric Tucker topped the century mark for the first time since a 107-yard performance at Texas A&M-Commerce in 2013

Side Notes
  • The game marked the first time the Hounds trailed in a non-conference game since September 28, 2013 at University of the Incarnate Word
  • The Greyhounds have outscored the opposition by a 50-9 margin in the second half this season
