Gridiron Hounds to Visit #20 Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday

PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico University football team (2-1; LSC 0-1) will look to bounce back from last Saturday's 28-24 heartbreaker against Midwestern State at the Lone Star Conference Football Festival. This week, the Greyhounds will visit 20th-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce (2-1; LSC 1-0).

The Greyhounds dropped a back-and-forth game against Midwestern State, 28-24 at the Lone Star Conference Football Festival. After a strong defensive stand, Eastern put together a four-play, 44-yard drive to take a 24-21 lead on a four-yard run from Jeremy Doucette with 5:25 left. After an exchange of punts, the Mustangs converted one fourth down, two third downs and recovered its own fumble on the way to a 90-yard go ahead drive, which was capped by a two-yard plunge from MSU quarterback Quade Coward.
 
The Lions charged to a 14-0 lead against Texas A&M-Commerce at the LSC Football Festival, but the Javelinas pulled even at 17-all, midway through the third quarter. Texas A&M-Commerce took the lead for good on a one-yard run from Richard Cooper and scored the final 20 points of the game to pull away for the 37-17 win.
 
Statistical Notes
Eastern is fourth in the nation in turnover margin and seventh in rushing offense. The Hounds also are 22nd in fourth-down conversion percentage and 26th in net punting. In the LSC, ENMU is third in scoring offense and defense. The Hounds boast the top running game at 301.3 yards per game and the highest passing efficiency rating at 153.9. Also strong on special teams, the Greyhounds rank second in kickoff coverage and third in net punting average.
 
Jeremy Doucette ranks tenth in the league in rushing, while D'Maujeric Tucker is 13th. Doucette is also fourth in the LSC is scoring. Jeremy Buurma is sixth in total offense, while Adrian Horton is eighth in the conference in receiving yards per game. Lawrence Hall is sixth in tackles, while De'Aundre Sanders is ninth. Timothy Callian paces the league in punting average and is second in punts downed inside the opponent's 20-yard line.
 
Texas A&M-Commerce ranks fourth in the nation in kick returns and 16th in run defense. The Lions also rank 16th in Division II in total offense and 34th in third-down defense.
 
Richard Cooper and Theo Wolford are third and fourth in the conference in rushing, respectively, while Harrison Stewart is the second-most efficient quarterback. Darby Smith is seventh in the LSC in receiving yards. Dionte Taylor is the conference's second-leading tackler.

On the Road
Over the last two seasons, the Greyhounds have posted an 8-2 record in road games. Over that stretch, the only two losses came at NCAA Division I Incarnate Word and 2014 NCAA Tournament participant Angelo State. ENMU has won eight of its last nine road decisions. In 2013, the Hounds clinched the LSC title with a 42-35 decision at Texas A&M-Commerce.
 
In the Series
The Greyhounds are 15-13 against Texas A&M-Commerce, and have four of the last six meetings. Although the home team has typically dominated the overall series, the road team has won each of the last two meetings. Last season, the Lions charged to a 14-0 lead at Greyhound Stadium and withstood a late rally from ENMU to post a 48-32 win. In 2013, Darrelyn McCloud's interception in the end zone sealed a 42-35 win and the LSC title for Eastern. The teams engaged in a memorable shootout at Greyhound Stadium on September 19, 2009, which ended as a 76-56 win for the Hounds.
