PORTALES, N.M. — The Eastern New Mexico softball team dropped both games of their double header Tuesday, falling 10-5 and 12-0 to Lubbock Christian University.
Susannah Chandler was the only Greyhound (8-12) to record hits in both games, going 4-for-6 with one RBI. Marleyna Pinon led the team on the day with three RBIs, going a perfect 2-for-2 in the first game of the doubleheader.
Aja Secheslingloff got the start in the first game, allowing only three earned runs through five innings. Disaster struck for the Hounds, when the Chaps (19-7) scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 10-4 lead. Katie Ripple would relieve Secheslingloff, finishing the game having pitched 1.2 innings while giving up no runs and allowing only one hit.
Eastern wasn't quite through yet, as they would not only score one run in the final inning, but load the bases with Erikka Burke at bat. Unfortunately Burke would strike out, leaving three runners stranded and ending the game.
The second game started out poorly for the Greyhounds, with LCU putting up four runs in the first and third innings. Kiana Zerr was named the starter, throwing 2.2 innings until being relieved by Ripple, who would go on to finish the game.
The Chaps would eventually put up four more runs in the fifth and final inning, ending any hopes of a Greyhound comeback. ENMU ended the day with 16 hits, compared to LCU's 30.
"The first game we got people on base, but we struggled to get them across the plate, especially when it mattered," said Greyhound assistant coach Tiffani Rodd. "The second game we needed to make adjustments and we didn't. The game is about adjustments and we just really had a hard time making the right ones in that one."
The team will hit the road this weekend, traveling to San Angelo, Texas, to take on Angelo State. The first game is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday, March 4.
