Women's Soccer Team Explodes for Team-Record 11 Goals Against Mustangs

Monday, September 19, 2016

PORTALES, N.M. —The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team waited for just over 394 minutes. At the 14:44 mark of Monday night's game against University of the Southwest, Courtney Pittman tallied the first goal of the season. From that point on, the Greyhound dominated, en-route to a record-setting 11-0 victory on Al Whitehead Field at Greyhound Stadium.

"Because of the drought, it was a little stressful at first, but after the first one our confidence shot up," said Head Coach Omar Morales. "This is definitely good going into conference."

The win improved ENMU to 4-3 in the series against the Mustangs, with a 3-1 record at home. Eastern had previously scored seven goals on two occasions against USW. The first came on September 7, 2007, and again exactly three years later.

The Turning Point
In the Numbers
  • The Hounds held a 46-0 lead in total shots and recorded the third-highest total in team history
  • ENMU had 22 shots on goal
  • Eastern's eight assists was a team record (Vanessa Gallegos, Sonny Narvais, Valeria Jaramillo, Fairbanks, Galdean, Zamarripa, Jenna Sievers, and Pittman)
  • Galdean and Zamarippa each had five points to tie for ninth on the ENMU single-game list
  • Eastern registered its second shutout of the season

The Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer team will return to action on Friday, September 23, to open Lone Star Conference play at Texas A&M-Commerce. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MT.
