SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team outlasted 11th-ranked Angelo State with a 76-72 overtime win over the Rambelles to remain perfect in Lone Star Conference action. Eastern improves to 14-3 overall and 10-0 in LSC play.
It marks the first 14-win season since the 2006-07 season and the first seven-game win streak by Eastern since the 2003-04 season.
"This was a great game by our ladies," ENMU Head Coach
Josh Prock said following the win. "They continued to rise to every challenge and continue to face all the adversity and hit home runs. I'm so proud of these kids. They're tough kids."
Mikaehla Connor finished with a career-high 25 points, nine rebounds and four blocks to lead all players while
Daeshi McCants picked up a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.
Dasia Johnson set the table for the offense, dishing out six assists.
The matchup between the top two teams in the Lone Star Conference standings lived up to the billing, with both defense's prevailing for much of the first half en-route to a 29-29 tie.
Mikaehla Connor shouldered much of the offensive load in the first half, leading all players with 12 points while
Johna McClelland and
Kassandra Harris each pulled down four rebounds.
Trailing by two with just over a minute and a half to go,
Daeshi McCants rejected a shot with four on the shot clock, but an offensive rebound and a three pointer at the end of the 30-second gave the Rambelles a 60-55 lead. On the ensuing trip down the court,
Brandi Gomez was fouled on a three-point attempt and knocked down all three free throws to cut the deficit to two, 60-58. With 11 seconds to play, Gomez again came up with a dagger from the top of the key to tie the game, the only field goal made by ENMU in the last five minutes of regulation.
"Brandi was beating herself up over giving up a three at the other end, but she kept her head and knocked it down when it mattered. I'm just super proud of my girls for stepping up and making plays. It wasn't just Brandi; it was an absolute team effort."
In overtime, the 'Hounds trailed once at the 3:26 mark, but never relinquished the lead following that point. Johnson opened the OT period with a runner along the baseline and
Kassandra Harris later found Connor with 2:30 to go to give the Green and Silver the lead for good, up 67-65. In the closing minute, Connor converted an and-one attempt to cement the victory by putting the Greyhounds up four.
"I'm very thankful and humbled by everything in this program, from our coaches to our trainers to our administration. Everyone gets to share in this," Prock said.
The Greyhounds return to the court on Thursday against rival West Texas A&M. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. against the Lady Buffs. For the latest news on all ENMU athletics, visit GoEasternAthletics.com.
